Practical Steps to Overcoming a Mind Set on the Flesh

1. Become Familiar with the Voice of the Spirit:

In order to set your mind on the Spirit, you first have to learn to decipher His voice. Sometimes believers have a difficult time distinguishing between the voice of the Holy Spirit and the provoking of their own emotions. The most effective method to accomplish this is through spending isolated time praying with Him, and meditating on His word. In just a short amount of time you will be able to perceive a difference between His voice and your own. If the voice in your heart is contradicting the word of God…its not Holy Spirit, its you._It is the job of Holy Spirit to lead and guide you into all truth and to reveal the deep things of God to you (1 Corinthians 2:10-15). He desires to give you the thoughts of God so that we may have the mind of Christ. This mind that we are supposed to receive contains thoughts that are far above our own ability to originate, but not beyond our ability to acquire.

2. Think on Heavenly Things (Things Above):

Thinking on heavenly things means thinking on things of the Spirit that have their origin in heaven. Scripture calls this, “setting our minds on things above.” If our minds are set on things above, we will not have them set on our carnal circumstances. The apostle Paul prescribes that we, “keep seeking things above, where Christ is,” and that we, “set our minds on things above, not on the things that are on the earth.”_Once we set our minds on the Spirit, we will walk in the spirit. We must learn to recognize the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-25) and put them to death so that we can walk in the Spirit and bare the fruit thereof. Learn the works of the flesh through reading scripture and recognize the thoughts that lead to you walking in them. From there you must replace those carnal thoughts with those that are set on things above.

3. Protect the “Gates” of Your Mind:

Even after discovering what things your mind should be set on, you will still be bombarded daily with outside stimuli that will shift your thinking back to the flesh if you allow it. There are influences from television, radio, internet, and many other media sources, that seek to sway your mind to the realm of carnality. If you are not protective over the things that you allow your mind to consume, you will inevitably find yourself reestablished in a mind set on the flesh.

You must make an assertive effort to eliminate these negative influences. That may include turning off your favorite TV program, deleting your favorite songs off of your playlist, or not visiting certain websites that promote sensuality. You are responsible for protecting the gates of your mind and only allowing those things in that are certain to be beneficial.
